Indy and I stayed locked in our own bubble for the rest of the weekend. It was easy to fall into the new routine during the day. But at night, we’d go outside under the stars and get lost in each other.

Discovering all the ways to make my pretty girl moan was intoxicating, but waking up with her wrapped around me each morning was different . . . It was peaceful.

And peace hasn’t been something I’ve had much experience with.

Today was the first morning I had to leave her for work, and it sucked way worse than I expected. Indy and Cohen were curled up on the couch. My boy looked at her like she was his whole world. I understand that feeling.

I thought about sticking around the house, not ready for our bubble to burst. But it’s Monday morning, and I told Connor I’d meet the guys today. Fifteen minutes later, I pull into a nearly empty parking lot, grab my gear from the backseat, and head into the locker room.

Low voices carry as I drop my gear on the bench.

Connor and Coach O’Doul round the corner and stop when they see me.

“Kingston,” O’Doul barks in his gruff voice. The man is a living hockey legend. He’s spent twenty years coaching the Revolution, and that was after retiring as a Hall of Fame right winger for a team that won five cups back-to-back. He’s older and broader, but I have no doubt Coach could hang with us on the ice if he needed to. “Coming to skate with the team?”

“Coach.” I shake his hand. “Just trying to get more time in before preseason starts.”

“Good. The sooner we can start working the on-ice chemistry, the better. Get your legs under you, son, and get ready for your first season in the pros.”

“Thanks, Coach. That’s the plan.”

Coach pats my arm and nods at Connor. “Don’t go easy on the rookie.”

The two of us watch Coach leave before Connor turns to me. “Ready to get your ass handed to you, rookie?”

“I guess I am.”
